DesaLIFE to participate in the I International Conference on Renewable Energy (ICRE) – El Hierro 2026

DesaLIFE will take part in the 1st International Conference on Renewable Energy (ICRE) – El Hierro 2026, where Ocean Oasis, the project coordinator, will present DesaLIFE alongside its business model for delivering freshwater through wave-powered desalination. Ocean Oasis will participate in the Water–Energy Nexus Roundtable, with the contribution focused on DesaLIFE and its pathway towards practical and commercial application.

The connection between water production and energy use is particularly relevant to island communities, where harnessing local renewable resources can open new opportunities to strengthen water security while supporting the transition towards cleaner energy systems.

The contribution will introduce DesaLIFE, co-funded by the European Union’s LIFE Programme, which aims to demonstrate offshore desalination powered directly by wave energy in Gran Canaria. It will highlight how this technology can complement existing water infrastructure and contribute to a more sustainable and resilient water supply for island communities.

Ocean Oasis will also present its business model for bringing renewable freshwater solutions to market, connecting the technological demonstration developed through DesaLIFE with its potential practical application. This perspective will explore how wave-powered desalination can help meet freshwater needs while reducing dependence on conventional energy sources.

Set against the backdrop of El Hierro’s experience in renewable energy, the conference will provide a forum for exchanging knowledge and exploring the technologies and collaborations needed to advance the energy transition, water security and sustainability in island regions.

We look forward to sharing the DesaLIFE approach and discussing how solutions developed in the Canary Islands can contribute to a more sustainable water future for island and coastal communities.

About DesaLIFE

DesaLIFE is a European project cofunded by the LIFE Programme that aims to demonstrate the technical, environmental, and economic viability of an innovative offshore desalination system powered directly by wave energy. The project is being developed on the north coast of Gran Canaria and seeks to contribute to the decarbonisation of the water sector in islands and coastal regions facing water scarcity challenges.By integrating renewable marine energy with freshwater production, DesaLIFE supports the transition towards a more sustainable, resilient, and climate-neutral future.

Co-funded by the European Union through the LIFE Programme. Views and opinions expressed are however those of the author(s) only and do not necessarily reflect those of the European Union or CINEA. Neither the European Union nor CINEA can be held responsible for them.
